At the turn of the 19th century an interest in revival style architecture grew. This Colonial style home is a classic example. A gabled and columned front facade gives the first hint at the attention to detail both inside and out. There are pedimented cornices, paired doors to both living and dining rooms, extensive crown moulding and the winding stair features paneled wainscoting as well as turned and twisted balusters. Bullet shaped hinges and massive circular door handles are just some of the hardware to be appreciated. Original to the house, and subsequently upgraded, is an elevator serving three floors from the basement up.
Upon entering the 40 ft long living room one is struck by the volume which manages to feel both stately and cosy all at the same time. The large fireplace is centered on the exterior wall and provides much of that comfortable appeal. Two sets of french doors give out to the rear patio. The room is lit by wall sconces at each end matching those in the dining room and the chandelier hanging in the foyer, there is elegance everywhere you look. The dining room has been known to seat 36 for dinner, although 12 is certainly more comfortable! This room also boasts two sets of french doors and a bay window at one end. An ample closet will comfortably hold all the bone china and glassware ever needed.
Three further bedrooms, all except one with its own bathroom are just up the hall. In the original configuration, there were “his and her” suites of identical size. At some point in the past ‘her’ suite was converted to two bedrooms. Continuing down and around you encounter the original servants quarters - two bedrooms sharing a bathroom at the end. A stairwell is here, bringing one back to the kitchen. Up on the third floor there is a library with wet-bar, a fully equipped theater and powder room. Finally, downstairs in the largely unfinished basement, there is a games room with pool table, a large safe, the elevator and 5 or 6 store rooms.
